SOFTBALL NEW ZEALAND BOARD ANNOUNCEMENT
Due to the onset of the Omicron outbreak, and the considerable risk of accelerated COVID spread over the next 2-4 week period, the Board has made a health-based decision by postponing the event.
The Board understands that some members will be disappointed by the decision, particularly given the significant disruptions already experienced through recent lockdowns and alert level requirements.
The Board has asked SNZ management to commence dialogue with the Canterbury Softball Association to determine whether a postponement to Labour Weekend (October 21-24) is feasible.
Communication has been held with both Black Sox and White Sox management this evening as to the Board decision and the opportunity a domestic pinnacle event in October may hold for their respective programmes. The postponement would mean an additional pinnacle opportunity for the Black Sox in the lead up to the WBSC Mens Softball World Cup November 26 - December 4 2022.
Cancelling the NFC was not an outcome the Board was seeking, and a new date of the postponed national event allows associations to communicate with their travel providers to seek credit for planned logistics.
The Omicron outbreak is expected to affect a vast number of New Zealanders and while local sport delivery can be run with the appropiate health measures in place, the bringing together of some 400 participants from all over the country to an event in Christchurch was deemed of significant risk to participants, their whanau and the wider New Zealand community.
