Congratulations to Hawkes Bay for winning the North Island U15 Girls Championship that was held in Wellington. Hawkes Bay were able to play consistent softball all week making and winning the final on the back off key hits and excellent pitching. In the final they defeated the home-town Wellington team who had been un-defeated up to that point but lacked the key hits needed off the tournament pitcher and MVP Courtney Gettins. The top batter was Paige Kauri (Counties Manukau) and top catcher was Kayla Rangiawha (Wellington).
North Harbour boys are the North Island U15 Boys Champions as they defeated the previously unbeaten Wellington team 3-2 in the final held in the sunny Hawkes Bay. They had only lost to Wellington all week but the North Harbour team pulled it out in the final being led from the front by MVP Eruera Drage. Top pitcher at the tournament was Kemera Hauiti Parapara (Wellington) with an ERA of 0.56. Top catcher was Jarrod Elliot (Wellington), and the top batters were both Jacob Zurcher (Hawkes Bay) and Justin Morgan (Manawatu).
Canterbury boys and girls teams took out the U15 South Island Boys & Girls Championships which were held in Invercargill. Both teams were undefeated throughout the tournament and were heavy favourites going into their respective finals. However Canterbury were tested by the Otago team in the final but eventually prevailed 7-5 winners. In consolation, the MVP (Hoani Iva-Keen), top pitcher (Jacob Wedlock), and top batter (Matthew Watts) were from the Otago team, with Daniel Karsten (Southland) being the top catcher.
The Canterbury girls team played Marlborough in the final winning 5-1. Paige Lovell (Marlborough) was the tournament top batter and MVP, with Tyler George-McNabb (top catcher) and Teremoana Elliot (top pitcher) both coming from the victorious Canterbury girls team.
Congratulations to the Wellington team for winning the U19 Boys Championship that was held in Lower Hutt. They defeated North Harbour 5-1 in the final. The Wellington team was the form team over the week and had lost only one game throughout the whole tournament. Josh Pettett (MVP) and Te Wera Bishop (top catcher) played strongly for Wellington, and Kurt Schollum (Upper South Island) was named the top batter. Josh Pettett was also named the top pitcher of the tournament.
The Auckland girls team took out the National U19 Girls Championship that was held in Dunedin. Auckland had started slowly in the tournament but was able to hit form in the all important cross-over and playoff section of the tournament. They eventually defeated Hutt Valley in a tense final 7-6. Danica Ferriso from Hutt Valley was the MVP, Beth Stavert (Auck) the top pitcher, Santana Harris (Auck) the top catcher, and Southland's Alice Wohlers was the top batter.
Hamilton Boys High School are again the National Secondary School Junior Boys Champions, repeating their feat from last year. They defeated Nelson College in the final 5-2. In the Girls final, Aorere College from Auckland are this year's National Secondary School Junior Girls Champions by defeating One tree Hill College in the final 19-4.
Here is the Day 1,2,3 & 4 results for the tournament, with Hamilton Boys High and Aorere college finishing top seeds in the round robin.
