Mel started his softball as a junior at the Bears Club.
He then went on the play for Bears, Roskill & Ramblers at the Senior level.
Mel first player for Auckland Senior National team in 1955-58 season and went on to play for 14 seasons. He was part of a very polished infield of which he was the 2nd baseman.
In 1961-62 he was in the North Island team and in 1965-66 he was named in the NZ ‘B’ team.
Mel was named a Legend of Auckland Softball for the 1958-1978 era.
