| Buzz is one of the greatest characters in Canterbury softball. He’s been a stalwart all his life, and is still playing the game for a Papanui president’s grade team in his early 70’s. Buzz has been for many years the ground manager at for the Papanui Softball Club at Papanui Domain, where he maintains the Lesley Byrne Memorial Diamond – Canterbury’s first skin diamond. A former Whanganui, West Coast and Combined Services pitcher, he’s renowned for his sense of humour, and his good-natured support for softball at all levels, in both men’s and women’s games. Buzz’s affability makes him one of the most popular figures in Canterbury and South Island softball, and also in the Evergreens community, where he has played, coached, and managed Canterbury teams for decades. |
