Sheree is the current secretary / equipment officer for the Horowhenua Softball Assc. She was also responsible for the reformation of the Association in the 2014-2015 season. Sheree has been the driving force behind the committee that has implemented 2 x Partnership Plans with SNZ. In the 2015-2016 season 20 schools are in a Kiwisport programme and 11 coaches have been put through the Induction Unit to upskill; Sheree bought a year 7&8 rep team down to the Hutt to play in the Lower Hutt Primary School Tournament to challenge the young players. A school holiday programme resulted in 26+ kids attending to learn more about softball. An umpire’s clinic was held in Levin with 9 new umpires attending. Sheree worked on translating some of the most commonly misunderstood rules and created a “Rules in Plain English” document. NZ White Sox player Lara Andrews has been utilised in several player clinics. In Dec14 a van load of Levin kids were bought down to Lower Hutt to attend these clinics and in Dec 2015, Lara made the trip to Levin to support the HJSA development plan. In March 2016 the Inaugural Regional Junior Softball Festival was held in Levin between HO Juniors, Central Sport Porirua and Saints Hutt Valley. 8 teams of U11, U13 & U15 players participated in the 1 day tournament with near on 300-400 spectators at Playford Park watching. Amazingly…everyone was also fed at the end of the day. As the 2016-2017 season starts, the Horowhenua Softball Association have a head start with early appropriate planning in place to further the Associations development. A 1 day coaching workshop is planned for Oct; a pitching clinic using US pitcher Alyson Spinas-Valainis is planned in Nov; Lara Andrews returns for more advanced clinics in Jan 2017; a funding seminar for all sporting codes is planned in August and Levin Intermediate Schools have already been contacted to attend Invitational Intermediate Tournaments to be held in Porirua and Lower Hutt later this year. A 1 day school tournament is proposed for April 2017. Coach, umpire, scorer and player development is critical to any progress and the Horowhenua Softball Association are well ahead of their major association counterparts at this stage. |
